WHOS-IN Pro 2006 - Installation:
Upgrade existing version 2, 2000 or 2003 installation:
Upgrade existing version 2005 installation:
To eliminate the downloading of the 'support' DLL's etc. that most people
already have on their
PC's, WHOS-IN Pro has been broken into 2 sections. WHOSIN.EXE contains the
'core' files
needed with this version, and SUPPORT-FILES.EXE contains the Visual Basic
runtimes,
MS
Access DLL's, and other associated files. You should only need the support
files *IF*
users experience problems loading WHOS-IN (due to missing files).
You can download the support files from:
http://www.hudsoft.com/products/whosin/support-files.html
*** IF you need to install any support files, ONLY install the
specific
file(s) required.
DO NOT INSTALL 'ALL' THE
SUPPORT FILES ***
---
1. Download WHOS-IN Pro (whosin.exe) to your local C: drive.
2. Run the program, which will create a new WHOS-IN folder, and extract the files into it.
3. MOVE the complete WHOS-IN folder to your server.
4. a) If necessary, set the server access rights for the
folder to FULL ACCESS.
b) Ensure that the folder OWNERSHIP is not set to a
NetAdmin user.
c) If the WHOS-IN folder is installed on a Windows server
that supports Domains,
set folder access permissions to Full
Access for Domain Users
5. Record the UNC path of the server folder, as you will
need this later.
NOTE: IP Addresses can also be used instead of a server name
if required.
Ex: \\YourServer\Share\Path etc could also be
\\123.4.56.789\Share\Path etc
6. Run the ADMIN.EXE program, & select the Tools / New User Defaults menu option.
7. Modify the New User Defaults to suit your organization.
8. Create an EMAIL containing the UNC PATH + USER.EXE
asking your users to run it.
As each user runs the user.exe, they will be added to the
database and an ICON or two
will be created on the workstation DeskTop or StartUp
folder. Example:
Please run \\server\share\path\user.exe
to install WHOS-IN on your workstation.
(Substituting \\server\share\path\
with the UNC path to the WHOS-IN folder)
If your users experience any problems with missing DLL's etc, download the
SUPPORT-FILES
into a folder on your local C: drive, then copy ONLY the individual file needed
to the server
WHOS-IN folder.
NOTE 1. No files need to be copied to
the workstations.
NOTE 2. Copying ALL the support files to the server will create large
amounts of network
traffic. DO NOT copy all the support files to the server unless necessary.
NETWORK LOGON SCRIPTS: (Optional)
WHOS-IN Pro allows you to pass the users LogonID (also known as Network
ID) to the USER
program as a parameter.
Example:
USER.EXE -UID:ghudson
you can use this in your network login script by substituting the username with
the variable for the user ID.
Examples:
\\server\share\path\user.exe -UID:%USERNAME% (for Windows Servers)
or
\\server\share\path\user.exe -UID:%USER (for Novell Servers)
or
START \\server\share\path\user.exe -UID:%USER (for Novell Servers using long
usernames)
As well as the Network Login script above, the command line can also be run
from any one of:
The users StartUp Folder
The users Desktop (Icon)
The Windows Start / Run command
TIP:
You can also pass a STATUS to WHOS-IN on the command line. Example:
\\server\share\path\user.exe -UID:%USERNAME% -STS:In

Upgrade existing version 2, 2000 or 2003 installation:
NOTE:
If you follow the steps below, installing WHOS-IN Pro will NOT affect or
modify your existing data,
and your USERS need do nothing other than restart from their existing desktop
Icon after the
installation is complete.
1. Download WHOS-IN Pro (whosin.exe) to your workstation C: drive. (NOT the server!)
2. Run the program, which will create a new WHOS-IN folder, and extract the files into it.
(Do NOT over-write your existing WHOS-IN files)
3. Ensure all users are logged OUT of your current version of WHOS-IN.
4. Make a BACKUP COPY of your current server WHOS-IN folder.
This will allow you to restore the
previous version, just in case there is a problem with the latest release.
5. RENAME your current server WHOS-IN folder to something like WHOS-IN-OLD.
6. MOVE the complete NEW WHOS-IN folder to your server.
7. RENAME the new WHOS-IN folder to the same name as your
previous version folder.
(This will allow users to immediately reconnect to the new
version at startup)
8. If necessary, set the server access rights for the
folder to FULL ACCESS.
(Also ensure that the folder OWNERSHIP is not set to a
NetAdmin user)
9. Run the ADMIN program & select the Tools / New User Defaults menu item.
10. Set the New User Defaults to whatever you feel is most suitable for your organization.
11. Run CONVERT.EXE to import your old user names & data into the new format database.
UPDATE YOUR NETWORK LOGON SCRIPTS:
WHOS-IN Pro allows you to pass the users LogonID (also known as Network
ID) to the USER
program as a parameter.
Example:
USER.EXE -UID:ghudson
you can use this in your network login script by substituting the username with
the variable for the user ID.
Examples:
\\server\share\path\user.exe
-UID:%USERNAME% (for Windows Servers)
or
\\server\share\path\user.exe
-UID:%USER (for Novell Servers)
NOTE: Previous versions of WHOS-IN passed the users NAME to the user
program.
WHOS-IN Pro has replaced this with the users Network Logon ID, so if you
are using a script, you will
need to modify / edit your existing logon script to the above.
